Menu of Letters 1895

Aet. 43, to a novelist. Her story “Suggestion” (Yellow Book, April 1895) was about a young, beautiful, effeminate, aesthetic, slightly immoral but affable character named Cecil Carrington who arranges marriages and affairs. Théophile Gautier’s Mademoiselle de Maupin (1835) was likewise gender bending. “Those whom you admire” may refer to Oscar Wilde and his coterie.
