Aet. 42, to his brother. An anonymous reviewer in the Athenaeum (28 April 1894) granted that Esther Waters was well written yet disappointing: “it seems to miss just that spark of inevitableness which should make it live… the soul is missing.”

The Connaught Rangers were stationed at King House, a grand Georgian mansion in Boyle, County Roscommon. Maurice was one of about a dozen officers who lived there with his family.
