Aet. 42, to his brother. Athur Quiller-Couch favorably compared George Moore’s new novel Esther Waters to Thomas Hardy’s novel Tess of the d’Urbervilles (1891) in the Speaker (31 March 1894); the review continued in the issues of 14 and 28 April and 12 May 1894.
The commercial success of Esther Waters was immediately threatened by a ban by the bookseller W.H. Smith & Son.
