In chapter 23 Esther told Fred Parsons that she has a child. The serialization in the Pall Mall Gazette concluded with Esther’s arrival at William Latch’s public house, where she was reunited with her son’s father. In chapter 26, Esther broke a toy boat given to her son. William Heinemann published a continental edition of Esther Waters (Leipzig: Heinemann and Balestier, 1894). English authors had enjoyed full though separate copyright protection in France since 1852. A review of Modern Painting by D.S. MacColl appeared in the Spectator (18 November 1893).
