Aet. 41, to an American publisher. An announcement of Esther Waters appeared in the Athenaeum (4 November 1893). A French translation of Vain Fortune has not been found. The first edition of Esther Waters (1894) was published in England without an American publisher, thereby losing copyright protection in the United States (according to the laws of the time).
