Aet. 41, to his brother. While acting as property manager (1870-1880), George Moore’s uncle invested in Moore Hall in order to cover a financial hole created by non-paying tenants. The lenders identified here are the deceased uncle’s relations.

The beautiful girl of 18 was the 17 year-old American Maud Alice Burke (later Lady Cunard), accompanied on a European tour by her widowed and remarried mother.

George’s next novel after Esther Waters, Evelyn Innes (1898), turned on the love affair of a 40 year old man with a 19 year-old ingénue.

“The Lovers of Orelay” in Memoirs of My Dead Life (1906) described the love affair George began around 1890 with a 17 year-old girl.
