Aet. 41, to a Scottish drama critic who reviewed The Second Mrs. Tanqueray in the World (31 May 1893), saying it was philosophically profound and technically perfect. “I love fruit when it’s expensive” was from Act I. “I say, Birdie looks rippin’ tonight, don’t she?” was from Act III. The play had been privately printed in London in 1892.
