Menu of Letters 1893

Aet. 41, to a French businessman, author, and art collector who wrote a two-volume Histoire de France de 1870 à 1873 (Paris: Charpentier, 1893).

On 2 June 1893 Augustus Moore was brought to trial for the rape of Miss Kate May, an 18 year old domestic servant of one Mrs. Gardner, who was probably a prostitute. It was alleged that on 18 May 1893 Moore forcibly entered the Gardner flat in Regent Street while Mrs. Gardner was out; he threw Kate May to the floor and raped her. Gardner returned to discover Augustus and the girl, who was in tears and accused him.

At the trial Augustus admitted to having intercourse with Kate, but insisted that it was the girl’s idea. She was unable to prove she had been assaulted and Augustus was acquitted.
