Aet. 40, to an American actress and author. In ’’Hendrik Ibsen’s New Play” (Pall Mall Gazette, 12 December 1892), William Archer argued that Ibsen’s symbolic play Bygmester Solness (Master Builder) was not theatrical because it lacked plot and character development. Elizabeth Robins was cast in the premier (Trafalgar Square, 20 February 1893). Archer afterwards called it a “weird, ironic tragedy” (World, 22 February 1893). His translation of Master Builder was published by Heinemann in February 1893.
