Aet. 40, to his brother. George Moore’s job interview did not succeed. Disappointed by the outcome, he wrote two articles, “Rival Cities” and “The Alderman in Art,” attacking the influence of politicians and merchants on artistic questions and proposing a credentialed Director of Fine Arts to administer public funds for art. When the directorate of the National Gallery was publicly discussed in 1893, he nominated himself, again unsuccessfully; see “The National Gallery” in the Speaker (2 September 1893).
