Aet. 40, to an American publisher. Scribner published George Moore’s revised Vain Fortune in April 1892. Mother and Child was the working title of Esther Waters (1894). to be published in England by Walter Scott. In Harper’s Weekly (27 July 1895) William Dean Howells said he failed to note George’s “great talent” until Esther Waters: “For a long time it seemed to me that Mr.Moore was simply trying to do the Zola act.” In Munseys Magazine (April 1897) Howells ranked George Moore and Thomas Hardy as England’s greatest living novelists.
