Aet. 39, to Edward Tyas Cook, editor of the Pall Mall Gazette. In a letter to the Pall Mall Gazette (17 September 1891), Jimmy Glover attacked George Moore as a literary fraud. In His Book (1911, p.242) Glover remembered the letter as ”a joke.” Lauderdale or Sydenham Maitland, a.k.a Richard Mansell, along with his brother William, was a London playwright, theatre manager, and friend of George in the late 1860s, when they were neighbours in South Kensington. In Salve (Chapter 9) George admitted that Dick Lennox in A Mummer’s Wife was a portrait of Maitland.
