Aet. 39, to a publisher. An unknown “H.D. Evans” is inscribed on the manuscript; Frederick Moule Evans (1832–1902) was a publisher in London at this time. Vain Fortune was published by Henry & Co. in late October 1891 after serialization in Lady’s Pictorial (4 July — 17 October 1891). One of Greiffenhagen’s illustrations depicted George Moore. George’s “A Remembrance” in Archibald Grove‘s New Review (August 1891) was later collected as Chapter 10 in Memoirs of My Dead Life (1906). That book contained about 91,000 words.
