1891-03-15 to George Earle Buckle

Menu of Letters 1891

Aet. 39, to the editor of The Times of London. As a private membership organization, the Independent Theatre Society was not required to obtain a license for theatrical performance. Following vehement objections in the press to its inaugural production of Henrik Ibsen‘s Ghosts (Royalty Theatre, 13 March 1891) translated by William Archer, the Society obtained licenses for all of its future shows in order to placate theatre owners. George Moore was a member of the Society’s selection committee and a collaborator with A. Teixeira de Mattos, Arthur Symons, and Arthur Kennedy in three plays that were staged by the Society over the course of three years.
