Aet. 38, to Katherine Bradley and Edith Cooper who wrote together under the pseudonym Michael Field. The Father’s Tragedy (1885) was one of their verse dramas. In “Is Judah Literature” (Hawk, 26 August 1890), George Moore favorably compared Michael Field to playwright Henry Arthur Jones. Starting in 1890, Arthur Symons was one of George’s dearest friends. At the time of this letter, George was writing his novel Esther Waters (1894) and promoting his play The Strike at Arlingford (staged and published 1893).
