Aet. 37, to a Scottish drama critic. The said proofs were of George Moore’s novel Mike Fletcher, published in late October 1889 by Ward & Downey. In “The Revival of English Drama” (New York Herald, London edition, 1 September 1889), George announced “the object of this article and those that may come after is … to attempt some criticism of the present standard of dramatic writing, and to encourage innovation for its own sake and to applaud originality wherever it may appear.” No articles came after. In “Our Dramatists and their Literature” (Fortnightly Review,1 November 1889) George reviewed Beerbohm Tree’s production of Robert Buchanan’s A Man’s Shadow at the Haymarket (12 September 1889). An article by William Archer in Augustus Moore’s Hawk has not been found.
