Aet. 37, to an American novelist. Clara Lanza published an article about George Moore as “A Rising Novelist,” in the New York World (23 April 1889) illustrated with an etched portait. Henry Vizetelly’s first prosecution for publishing translations of Émile Zola’s novels was in October 1888. His second prosecution was begun the day before this letter. He was charged with publishing “obscenity” (expurgated translations of Zola and other authors). The litigation led to his bankruptcy and imprisonment (in that order).
