1889-03 to Émile Zola

←Menu of Letters 1889

Aet. 37, to a French novelist. George Moore did not neuter the lines of Confessions of a Young Man that offended Zola, but his review of Zola’s Le Rêve (1888) was exceedingly positive. Goncourt’s play La Patrie  en Danger (1873) was staged by the Théâtre Libre in March 1889. According to a Journal entry (8 May 1888), Edmond de Goncourt was offended by George’s criticism of his writing.
