Aet, 36, to the editor of the Pall Mall Gazette.
In “This Won’t Do” in the Pall Mall Gazette (9 April 1886) W. T. Stead argued against Gladstone’s position on Home Rule for Ireland. Clause 24 was a provision in the Government of Ireland Bill 1886 that would have removed Irish MPs from the British Parliament following Home Rule.
From 15 September to 17 October 1884, Stead ran a series of investigative reports in the Pall Mall Gazette entitled “The Truth about the Navy and Its Coaling Stations,” arguing that Britain’s naval infrastructure was dangerously weak and needed major reforms. Lord Randolph Churchill was involved in political debates over naval expenditure at the time.
Stead traveled to Russia in May–June 1888 to conduct an in-depth interview with Tsar Alexander III. His articles promoting British rapprochement with Russia appeared in the Pall Mall Gazette and in his book The Truth about Russia (1888).
George Moore referenced Book of IV of Arthur Schopenhauer’s The World as Will and Representation (1818). As an officer of the National Vigilance Association, Stead vigorously campaigned against sexual transgression.
