Aet. 36, to William Heseltine Mudford, editor of The Standard. St. John Brenon’s charge of plagiarism appeared in the Standard (19 September 1888). George Moore’s actor in Regent Street was an allusion to Henry Irving, who responded by calling George a “blockhead” in The Times (3 October 1888, page 7). Brenon replied to George’s letter in the Standard (25 September 1888). Harry Quilter and William Swan Sonnenschein also contributed letters to the dust-up.
