1888-02-23 to Édouard Dujardin

Aet. 35, to a French man of letters. The enclosed translation was of George Moore’s Confessions of a Young Man, which in March was to begin serialization in Dujardin’s Revue indépendante. The defamation is likely a reference to the Earl of Durham’s complaint against James Davis, editor of The Bat. On 11 February 1888, a warrant was issued for the arrest of Davis, who fled England to avoid prosecution. After the collapse of The Bat, George Moore’s brother Augustus, who was one of Davis’ associates, formed a syndicate to restart The Bat as The Hawk. Thomas De Quincey introduced the term “echo augury” in Chapter 4 of his Autobiography from 1785 to 1803 (1853). The terms was translated “echo prophetique” in Chapter 1 of George’s Confessions.
