Aet. 35, to a Scottish drama critic. George Moore’s friend at Freshcombe Lodge was Harry Colvill Bridger. William Archer’s article in the Nineteenth Century (October 1887) was a stage history of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale. George Bernard Shaw’s article in the Pall Mall Gazette (29 September 1887) was an unsigned review of William Edward Norris’s novel Major and Minor (1887). Shaw likewise reviewed A Mere Accident in the Pall Mall Gazette (19 July 1887). George Moore’s essay “Turgueneff” would appear in the Fortnightly Review (1 February 1888). His friend Julia Frankau wrote Dr. Phillips: A Maida Vale Idyll (1887) under the pseudonym Frank Danby.
