Menu of Letters 1887

Aet. 35, to a French novelist. The “Manifeste des cinq contre La Terre” appeared in Le Figaro (18 August 1887); Zola responded in Ghil Blas (21 August 1887). George Moore is not known to have reviewed La Terre, though he facilitated a sale of English publishing rights to Henry Vizetelly (a transaction that landed Vizetelly in jail). Paul Alexis continued to revise the translation of A Mummer’s Wife (La Femme du Cabotin) until the end of 1887.
