Emile Zola’s protest in Le Figaro concerned the French government’s refusal to license his play Germinal for public performance; a slightly expurgated script was licensed in 1890. No review of Zola’s novel L’Œuvre has been found in the Academy. George Moore’s new novel A Drama in Muslin was serialized in the Court and Society Review (14 January – 1 July 1886).
