Aet. 32, to a French novelist. A Mummer’s Wife would be published in one volume in November 1884. It was dedicated to James Davis. The novel that followed, A Drama in Muslin, was not dedicated. George Moore used the word “mummer” as a vaguely derogatory synonym for actor. His review of J.K. Huysmans À rebours was entitled A Curious Book. Zola’s novel Germinal was serialised in the Paris daily Ghil Blas (26 November 1884 – 25 February 1885).
