Aet. 32, to a French novelist, enclosing “My New Novel by Emile Zola” (Pall Mail Gazette, 3 May 1884) and “A Breakfast with Edmond de Goncourt” (St.James’s Gazette. 13 May 1884). Zola’s novel La Joie de Vivre was published in 1884 as the twelfth volume in his Rougon-Macquart series; Germinal was the thirteenth in 1885.
