Aet. 34, to his mother. The first Levee of the 1884 Castle season took place on 29 January; the State Ball was held the following week; the season ended with St. Patrick’s Ball on 17 March. George Moore’s “girl novel” was A Drama in Muslin, including scenes from the Castle season of 1882. The unsentimental book he was working on now was A Mummer’s Wife, which would be published the following year. Anna Browne was a cousin; Janie was a member of the Ruttledge family of Cornfield, County Mayo, one of whom had taken over the management of Moore Hall from Joseph Blake. George Leopold Bellew was the second son of the second Baron Bellew; he eventually became the fourth Baron. Florence Lady Power was the wife of Sir Richard Crampton Power, 3rd Baronet, of Kilfane, County Kilkenny.
