Aet. 32, to his mother mentioning his brief engagement to a first cousin: either Maud O’Conor of The Palace, Elphin, County Roscommon, or Maud Browne of Browne’s Grove, Tuam, County Galway. The first State Ball of the Dublin Castle season was on13 February 1884; for a description see A Drama in Muslin, Book II, Chapter 4. This letter also mentioned Mary Helena Grattan-Bellew; Eveline Mary Dease; and either Julia or Mary Burke. The first Calico (costume) Ball was held on 14 February 1884; it turned up in A Drama in Muslin (1886, page 206).
