Aet. 30. to a French novelist. George Moore asked Zola to review a new French translation of George Eliot’s novel Daniel Deronda. He mentioned Émile Zola, a new book by Paul Alexis. The monthly Temple Bar was a popular literary magazine in London. Its publisher George Bentley would reject Moore’s first novel, A Modern Lover, in 1883. Zola’s novel Pot-Bouille was serialized in Le Gaulois (23 January- 14 April 1882). An English translation, probably by George Moore, with a preface signed by him, was published by Vizetelly in 1884. George’s “A Visit to M. Zola” appeared in the St. James’s Gazette (26 May 1881).
