Aet. 27, to a French man of letters. This “interview” was later identified by George Moore as a letter. It was one of a series of interviews by Alexis analyzing Émile Zola’s stature outside France. Alexis introduced George as a London journalist and poet. “Mon éditeur” was possibly George Bentley or William Tinsley. Victor Hugo had deplored the rise of naturalism in the Whitehall Review (18 October 1879).
