Aet. 17, to a servant at Moore Hall who later inspired the character John Randall (aka Mr. Leopold) in Esther Waters. George Moore spelled his surname “Apply,” indicating that is how he pronounced it. The National Library of Ireland spells the surname “Appleby” in its catalog. This letter also mentions William Maloney Jr., a servant who accompanied George to Paris four years later.
