16 April 1899 to Ernst Heilborn

Menu of Letters 1899

Aet. 47, to a German man of letters. In 1899, the London correspondent of Allegemeine Zeitung may have been Eugen Oswald (1859–1940), a German journalist and literary critic. The unnamed would-be Stuttgart publisher of a German Esther Waters in 1899 may have been Deutsche Verlags-Anstal or J. G. Cotta’sche Buchhandlung Nachfolger; the Berlin publisher of a translation by Annie Neumann-Hofer was Egon Fleischel in 1904.

A German translation of Evelyn Innes by Anna Gerstmann in 1899 was not published. A translation by Max Meyerfeld of Evelyn Innes and Sister Teresa entitled Irdische und Himlische Lieb [Earthly and Heavenly Love] was published in two volumes by Egon Fleischel in 1905 without a preface by Heilborn.
