Autograph letter signed, New York Public Library, 213 words

92, VICTORIA STREET, S.W.

Friday night [19 January 1900]

Dear Fisher Unwin

I was surprised to hear from the printers that you refused to pay for my corrections. I have had twenty years of experience in authorship and this is the first time a publisher has done such a thing. I shall have to see you about this matter and I hope that we shall arrive at an amical understanding.

Of course I am fully aware that my proof corrections are exceptional. I have decided to alter the title of the play. "The Tale of a Town” is not very good — "The Bending of the Bough” is a better title, so Yeats thinks and so does everyone I have consulted.

The printers will only have to alter the title page and remove the title, which they have stupidly put on the top of the pages.

I have had expert opinion regarding the play, perhaps you have had too. I hope your expert opinion agrees with my expert opinion. My experts are all in favour of the play.

I shall try to call on you on Monday.

Yours sincerely

George Moore
