My dear Mother

I have received a letter from Augustus’ wife asking for the cheque. I wrote in reply that I had no authority from you to hand it over, that if she had the rest of the money that I would meet her at the office. I mentioned that if she had not the whole of the money that I would assist but that I could not pay the balance 35£. I hope that my letter meets with your approval.

I am working hard and hope to finish my new novel this autumn. It will be the longest and I think the best book I have written.
