1894-spring to Ada Leverson

Autograph letter signed, University of British Columbia, 233 words

Adur Lodge, Old Shoreham, Sussex.

[Spring 1894]

Dear Mrs Leverson

I have been here, staying with some old friends, for some little while. Your letter was not forwarded at once and I delayed answering. This was not a right or a gracious thing to do but I hope you’ll forgive my negligence.

I return to town tomorrow and shall look forward to seeing you. The weather is quite wonderful. They say here that no such spring has been known for fifty years. The hedge rows are in a blaze and the fields are just beginning to catch flower. All the currant bushes are out and the fruit trees look like brides.

But you take little interest in herbal, arboreal and floral manifestation. Today there there is a picnic. But it will not amuse me. A young girl is helplessly in love with a man who is rather nice — poor girl, all her senses except one seem to be utterly paralyzed

I have thought of a subject for a three act play and am reading a French novel which was highly recommended to me. I do not think much of it; it seems to me that I have read it all before. I wonder what you would think of it. It is called L'Automne d’une femme.

Yours always sincerely

George Moore
