Dear Miss Millman

I send you Confessions of a Young Man; I should have sent it before but the publication has been delayed. I only hope you will not misunderstand the book, that is to say I hope you will not think it is a statement of my opinions concerning life and things; — the book

is merely emotional and paradoxical.

I take it that a human soul is daily deluged in emotions quite irrespective of its opinions; I have tried to fix the ephemeral and sometimes almost involuntary passing of emotions, that is all; if I believed everything in my book as I believe that two and two make four I should be a fit subject for Hanwell.

Forgive me this explanation and believe me
