Text is a further rewriting of A Modern Lover (A5), and although most characters, many incidents, and much of the dialogue of the earlier book is retained, it is described by GM in the new “Preface” as being a “new book from end to end.” Five chapters are added, eight chapters of the original story are omitted, and the latter half of the book is largely rewritten. One new portion in chapter XXI is based on “Souvenir sur Mallarmé” in Parsifal, April 1909.

Later impressions have a different imposition:

  • [1-20]8, [21]4, [22]2 (tipped in);
  • with list of nine titles on verso of half title leaf in NEW AND UNIFORM (in place of REVISED) EDITION;
  • publisher’s device on title page in orange,
  • rear endpapers separate and not a part of the final gathering,
  • and bound in a darker green cloth with a rounded spine.

“Epistle Dedicatory to Thomas Ruttledge,” dedicating the Carra Edition to GM’s “oldest and dearest friend,” who also served as agent for his Irish properties.

“Apologia pro scriptis meis” – completely different from the preface to the first American edition of Memoirs of My Dead Life (A29-2a) – the general introduction to the Carra Edition, was previously published in the Fortnightly Review, October 1922.

“Preface” is the same as the first edition (A36-a above) except for the omission of the final nine words of the second paragraph.

The text of the novel is the same as the first edition.

The Carra Edition of twenty-one volumes, plus two supplementary volumes in a matching format, were printed on paper watermarked with a facsimile of GM’s signature. Eighteen of the volumes have tipped-in frontispieces, sixteen being reproductions of photographs, paintings or sketches of GM. The Carra Edition includes:
