Previously unpublished. Intended as a part of The Untilled Field (A26), the story “proved to be too long and perhaps too complex” to be included in that volume (Hone, p 247). Sheets of this edition, but with preliminary sheets of second edition (A27-c), were reissued later in both bright red and a cheaper lighter red cloth. Sheets of this edition, with preliminaries reset and a 16-page gathering of advertisements added at end with final leaf serving as rear paste-down endpaper, were used for:

A27-a2 Heinemann’s Colonial Library

Heinemann’s Colonial Library, No. 317, London, 1905. When sheets of first edition were exhausted, sheets of the second English edition (A27-c) were used for the series (see A27-c2).

A27-c Second English edition, revised

Title Page

[Not provided by Gilcher, same as A27-a]

Launch

Published late November 1906 at 6/- in a format similar to the first edition (A27-a). This edition precedes the first American (A27-2a) and Tauchnitz (A27-b) editions chronologically, but is a later text.

Description

Height: 7 3/8 in; 7.38 in; 18.73 cm

Width: 4 7/8 in; 4.88 in; 12.38 cm

[  ]4, 1-198, 204; pp [2], vi, 312, comprising:

  • blank leaf, not paginated;
  • half title, with a list of ten “New 6s. Novels.” on verso, pp [i-ii];
  • title page same as first edition (A27-a), with

First printed, November, 1905

in center and copyright notices at foot of verso as in first edition, except first two lines are transposed, pp [iii-iv];

  • dedicatory letter as in first edition p [v]-vi;
  • text pp [1]-311, with printer’s imprint as in first edition (p 334) at foot of p 311; p [312] blank;
  • endpapers, edges and binding identical with first edition.

Contents

There are minor revisions throughout and from page 101 to page 186 the text is rewritten, with a new chapter VII replacing chapters VII-XI of first edition. In a letter to Edmund Gosse, accompanying a presentation copy of this edition, GM wrote regarding the revisions, “You advised me to revise the middle chapters, suggesting that the correspondence might be carried on between the two priests. That was all and that was enough.” – The Library of Edmund Gosse, p 186 (B31).

Sheets of this edition were later issued in blue cloth binding. Sheets of this edition, with preliminaries partially reset and a 16-page gathering of advertisements added at end with final leaf serving as rear paste-down endpaper, were used for:

A27-c2 Heinemann’s Colonial Library

Heinemann’s Colonial Library, No. 317, London, 1905. Remainder sheets of first edition (A27-a) were first used for this series (A27-a2), but apparently the demand continued after these were exhausted and sheets of the second edition (A27-c) were used. Outwardly the two issues are identical.

The normal binding has three scallops at top and bottom of the spine, but Florian J. Shasky has a copy in his collection which has only two, as on the binding of the 1918 and 1926 Heinemann editions of Confessions of a Young Man (A12-2d and A12-2d2).

“Épître Dédicatoire” is a dedicatory letter, “A Edouard Dujardin,” of previous editions; the “Preface” is new; and text is rewritten, with two of the principal characters. Rose Leicester and Ralph Ellis, renamed Nora Glynn and Walter Poole.

This final revised text was used when The Lake was included with The Unfilled Field in:

A27-2d Carra Edition

Carra Edition, Volume VIII, Boni and Liveright, New York, 1923, previously noted (A26-2c). The final text also was used for:

A27-3d2 Ebury Edition

Ebury Edition, Heinemann, London, September 1936.

Colin Smythe, Gerrards Cross, 1980 [26 January 1981], with an “Afterword” by Richard Allen Cave, in an edition of 823 copies issued in hardback and 2,524 in paperback. Included are “Épître dédicatoire” reprinted from first edition (A27-a), “Preface” and text of third English edition (A27-d). Dr. Cave’s “Afterword” and three “Appendices”:

  1. Chapter IX from first edition (A27-a)
  2. Father Gogarty’s dinner party from chapter VII of second English edition (A27-c)
  3. ‘King and Hermit’ and ‘The Monk and His Pet Cat’ translated by Kuno Meyer, portions of which GM had incorporated, with minor changes, into chapter VIII.
