My dear Mother
I received your very kind letter and beg to assure you that there is no reason to be anxious about me. If I do not write more frequently it is because my work leaves me but little time for correspondence. I have to work hard for I live almost entirely by what my writing brings in.
This brings me to a matter of business. You are aware that your management of my property was, so far as I was concerned, a disastrous one. You are aware that you get five hundred a year out of the property and that I get less than two hundred. It is not with any intention of causing you pain that I allude to these facts but it is necessary to take them into consideration in determining your course in the matter I have to lay before you.
I have accidentally discovered that two sums of money — I have reason to believe insignificant sums of money — are lying in my father’s name in two public departments.
I do not know if these monies are yours or mine by my father’s will. Will you find out to whom this money belongs by right and, if it belongs to you, will you, having regard to the enormous losses which I have sustained and in which you have not participated, forfeit your right to this money and assign it to me?
Affect yours
George Moore.
