1900-06-27a to Thomas Fisher Unwin

Autograph letter signed, New York Public Library, 268 words

92 VICTORIA STREET. S.W.

[Wednesday] June 27th 1900

Dear Fisher Unwin

You attribute to me a suggestion which I did not intend to make. I merely said that your proposal to act as my literary agent for the disposal of the American rights of Evelyn Innes was an afterthought. It could not have been anything else. I agreed to it, but I did not associate the two books together except so far that they were going to be published by you on certain terms. The literary agency has nothing to do, so I think, with the publications of the books in England, and cannot be made to extend to the Sister Teresa. This I maintain, but I do assure you that I never meant to suggest that the passage referring to the American publication of Evelyn Innes was written in surreptitiously.

In my last letter I made you a just and liberal offer in explicit terms, and of the justice and liberality of my offer I am so convinced that I am prepared to submit it to any unprejudiced person. This offer I hope you will accept. If you do, all will be peace and rest.

If you concede that the books return to me in ten years I shall feel flattered and pleased, but I withdraw this clause so that you may have proof that I desire to arrive at a settlement which will be a mutual satisfaction to us.

Truly yours

George Moore
