3 Danes Inn, Wych St, Strand

[June 1886]

My dear Julian

When you wrote to ask me to ask Lady Ardilaun to get you into the brewery I could not see my way to complying with your request. I am not at all on intimate terms with Lady Ardilaun and this year I did not call on her on account of my book.

However I received a note from her the other day asking me to lunch and since then she has written to me again asking me to call on her so that we may have a long talk about pictures. Still I do not think that I will ask her on either of these occasions to ask her brother-in-law to take you into his brewery; I think I will wait until the newspapers announce the success of my book (for it will be a success), for as far as I understand the world I am led to think that people are never so anxious to help you as when you do not stand in need of help. I think that if my book is admitted to be a great success Lady Ardilaun would be more likely to go out of her way to oblige me than she would be to do so now. I will therefore wait, and in a couple of months time will pop the question.

I will send you a copy of ADM in a day or two. Vizetelly forwarded me an early copy to Brighton where I have been staying for a few days; I read it through
