92 Victoria Street

Monday night. [23 January 1899]

Dear Lena,

My dining room ceiling has come down at last. In the house in which I have the misfortune to live, structural alterations have been in progress for the last six months and with the above result.

But will you come to tea or will you call when you go out in the morning? I do want to show you the corrections I spoke to you about.

You know German very well, I know, but do you know German well enough to tell literary German from hack German? I have received a sample translation from a woman who wants to translate Evelyn Innes into German. What I am asking is very difficult, I know; it would be difficult for us to decide, judging from two chapters, the exact merit of an English translation of a foreign novel. Still I think you could make a good guess. I should like to show you the sample I have received from the lady.

As ever

George Moore

I am more than sorry for having to put you off but if you come to [illegible] you will pity my sad plight.
