There are at least three copies extant of what may have been a trial binding. These have the author's name in two lines on the spine, and the title on the cover in one line. This variant was described by Danielson as being the normal binding.
Thomas Warburton in Notes and Queries says there is a variant state of the spine lettering with the author’s name on two lines instead of one, but no copy of this state has been located.

In the dedicatory letter, dated “May, 1903,” which is found in no other edition, GM says, “I have omitted two stories . . . and I have introduced many other little changes.” The two omitted stories are “In the Clay” and “The Way Back”, and among the changes, the section “Some Parishioners” is divided into four stories, with the first retaining the original title and the others retitled “Patchwork,” “The Marriage Feast,” and “The Window.” Stories from this edition presumably were used for:

In the author’s note, new to this edition, GM says, “the new edition of The Untilled Field will allow me to seek an outline that eluded me in the first version of ‘The Wild Goose’; and should I find the needed outline, the story will become, perhaps, dearer to me than the twelve [sic] that precede it and that need no correction.” Actually there are fourteen stories in all, thirteen preceding “The Wild Goose,” which was completely rewritten and much shortened for this final version.

The “Publisher’s Note,” possibly written by GM, states, “The first English edition of The Untilled Field (1903) contained two stories: ‘In the Clay’ and ‘The Way Back,’ which were removed from the second (1914) and subsequent editions. In the present edition the author has included a new tale, ‘Fugitives,’ based upon the subject matter of the other two, and here printed for the first time.”
The text of this edition, enlarged 125 percent, was reproduced by photo-offset for:

Henn, GM’s “Preface” (reset) from the 1914 edition (A26-c), the author’s note (reset) added to 1926 edition (A26-d), the publisher’s note (reset) of the 1931 edition (A26-e), and two “Appendices” — “In the Clay” and “The Way Back” (reset) from first edition (A26-a). Bibliographical Comment
In addition to the previously noted Gaelic versions (D:Ga-l, D:Ga-2, D:Ga-3, and D:Ga-4), see D:Cz-l for Czech translations of “A Letter to Rome,” “A Play-house in the Waste,” and “The Qerk’s Quest”; D:Ge-l, D:Ge-2, D:Ge-4, and D:Ge-14 for German translations of “Home Sickness,” “The Wedding Gown,” “The Window,” and “The Wild Goose.” A French translation, Champ Sterile, Paris, Stock, 1923, “avec une préface d’Ed Jaloux,” listed (p 217) by G. P. Collet in George Moore et La France (B58) and again by Jean C. Noel in George Moore: L ’Homme et L’Oeuvre (B60), has proven to be a ghost.
I am indebted to Prof. Roger Lhombreaud for attempting to trace the title in France and for determining that it had “not been published by Stock or any other publisher.” The listing of this title by M. Collet and M. Noel may possibly be accounted for by the fact that in 1923 Stock did publish Le Lac (D:Fr-21), with a preface by Jaloux, and that GM originally intended The Lake to be a part of The Untilled Field.
