Bibliographical Comment

“Mildred Lawson” was rewritten as “Henrietta Marr” and included in In Single Strictness (A44), which was reissued as Celibate Lives (A52) with “Hugh Monfret” omitted. The latter story is a reworking, although not strictly a rewriting, of “John Norton.” See D:Cz-l for Czech translation of “Mildred Lawson” and “John Norton”; D:No-l and D:No-2 for Norwegian translations of “Agnes Lahens” and “John Norton”; and D:Ru-3 for a Russian translation of “Mildred Lawson.” According to Stanislaus Joyce in My Brother’s Keeper, New York, 1958 [p 98], James Joyce translated a “good part” of Celibates “into Italian while he was living in Trieste,” but no record of publication has been located.
