92 Victoria Street

Wednesday [8 February 1899]

Dear Fisher Unwin,

Conder means that he cannot be very explicit, that his means do not allow him to go in for the style of illustration which may be summed up in the phrase,

"She stood on the steps.”

His pictures could be inserted into the book but they would have little connection with the text. I think that three or four would be enough.

Conder could do a bookcover very well. A bookcover is very important.  But pray do not employ Conder if you want a drawing of Evelyn Innes, a drawing that people will say "yes, I can imagine her being like that." His Evelyn will be a shadow. I hope that this is quite clear.

Always truly yours

George Moore
