1886-12 to an Officer of the British Railroad
Autograph letter signed, University of Texas at Austin, 181 words
[December 1886]
Dear Sir
I have a favour to ask. I am about to begin a story, the two principal characters of which are a stoker and an engine driver. To write this story it will be necessary for me to travel some few miles on a railway engine. Will you kindly give me the necessary permission?
My name is very possibly not unknown to you — I am the author of A Mummer’s Wife, a book that most people have read. I am a contributor to the St James’s Gazette, and Mr. F. Greenwood if a reference be needed will give you any information concerning me you require.
I am very sorry to trouble you but I must. I shall feel much obliged if you will give me permission to travel a few miles down the line on an engine; any engine so long as it passes through a tunnel will suit me.
Yours very truly
George Moore.
