Sunday [19 March 1899]
Dear Mrs. Carl Meyer
I send you the review containing Tourgueneff’s letters . They will interest you here and there but they are often trivial. Then the suppression of all the love passages has deprived them of their real interest. However, I send them.
The name of the lady who is translating my novel is Anna Gerstmann; I hope she is the same as the woman you spoke of and of whose abilities you think so highly.
My publisher is going to bring out a six-penny edition of Esther Waters. The temptation to revise the text was irresistable, I had to give way, and am now deep in emendations. I had quite forgotten my book and am agreeably surprised. It is commonly, somewhat coursely written in places, but mere writing is a pleasure and I hope — well, I don’t know what I hope but I am rather pleased.
Let me have your Berlin address so that I may send it to Dr. Heilborn, but I hope to see you before you leave.
Very sincerely
George Moore
