8 Kings Bench Walk, Temple

Monday night [16 June 1890]

My dear Jacques,

I  was very glad to get your letter. I shall be delighted to spend a few days with you, to see you is one of my greatest pleasures.

I am glad you liked my article on the Salon; it was very much liked here. But what I want to do is to write another good book and that is more difficult. I am at present very much vexed and worried about my work; my state of mind is like what yours was last year.

I am sorry that Degas is cross, it really is too stupid of him. He will have to get over it but I will take your advice and refrain from sending him the article. I developed the notes you gave me and, I think, developed them very well but the editor of the magazine told me that the article was already too long. I shall not be able therefore to use the new matter until I bring out a book of essays.

I have just read Maupassant’s new book. You remember your father spoke highly of the opening chapters when I was in Paris. I like the opening chapters, the rest seems to me to be commonplace.

What week in August will suit you?

Kind regards to Madame Blanche and believe me to be

Affect. yours
