Autograph letter signed, National Library of Ireland, 211 words

The Green,  Southwick, Sussex

[July 1887]

Dear Mr Wigram

I send you Time carefully corrected. I count on you to see that these corrections go in, but I am forgetting I shall see the proof sheets of the book. I hope you will write to the proofreader for it is disgraceful that he should not know that "all" with no plural noun following demands the verb in the singular etc. etc. etc. I have half a mind to write to the Pall Mall to explain that I am not responsible for the text. I hope that I shall receive proofs soon of the next part for I am anxious that it should be printed correctly. I received a nice letter from La Revue internationale — the editor says A Mere Accident is one of the strangest books she is acquainted with ’’beaucoup de talent malheureusement employé à un récit trop terrible.” Pray get the book and read it. I took more pains with it than anything I have written; I had revise sheets and I only know of one defective phrase. How things do escape one.

Yours very truly

George Moore
