Further impressions were issued with title leaf an integral part of the first gathering. Some copies do not have the inserted publisher’s catalogue at the end, and others have a catalogue which lists (p [15]) Muslin among the NEW NOVELS OF 1915.

All copies of the first impression, including those blind stamped PRESENTATION COPY on title page, seem to have the title leaf tipped in on a stub, and apparently there is no explanation other than the possibility of a misprint on either the recto or verso of the original leaf serious enough to cause it to be canceled. The publisher’s records show, according to Miss Grace Cranston of William Heinemann Ltd., that 2,000 sets of sheets were printed for them in July 1915 and at the same time 1,000 sets were printed for Brentano’s (see A34-a2). The records also show that 2,030 cancel title leaves were printed in August, but without an explanation of why they were printed. One hypothesis is that all 3,000 sets were inadvertently printed with the Brentano imprint on the title page. According to Miss Cranston “ten copies… were specially bound up in demy 8vo format for the author in September 1915.” Untrimmed Brentano sheets (8 3/4 in; 8.75 in; 22.23 cm  x 5 1/2 in; 5.5 in; 13.97 cm) were used for these author’s copies but they were placed in a special Heinemann binding similar to the regular edition with the addition of a double-rule border in blind at outer edges of front cover, on the spine the gilt panel is elongated, the side rules are heavier, and there is a short rule between the title and the author’s name. GM presented one of these special copies to Maud Cunard dated “October 1st 1915” and it is now in the collection of Sir Rupert Hart-Davis.
